A house isn’t always a home and a home isn’t always a house. The concept of a home is both universal and distinctly unique to each individual person and each culture from every part of the world. From big cities to small towns to tiny rural villages, each culture is influenced by its own history, politics, economy, and resources in how they define a home. That being said, there are a few common traits of an ideal home that we can all aspire to. Join the challenge and win your very own ADU!
The ADU Home Design Challenge 2023 is the first in a series of annual competitions focusing on the concept of green building architecture. As one of the most versatile forms of design, green build architecture offers creative, efficient, and sustainable solutions when designing ADU's and living spaces. Operating either as a building block that is part of an integrated system, or as a stand-alone entity, green construction breaks from traditional built projects and allows novel designs to be realised.
For this competition, participants are tasked with designing an ADU that can be constructed in any form or layout, ADU will supply the ICCF green blocks used in the build. The ADU can be set in a location of their choice, either rural, urban, or suburban. The judge will be looking for design concepts that show a critical analysis of what an ADU is and could be in an increasingly interconnected technology-resource driven world.
This is the first competition in an annual competition series and is being launched in combination with an apprenticeship opportunity. By incorporating sustainable features and energy-efficient systems, participants should strive to create housing solutions that minimize environmental impact and long-term costs while seamlessly integrating into the existing urban landscape. Ultimately, the goal is to inspire and reshape the future of ADU's across the country through aesthetically pleasing and innovative designs that challenge traditional notions of ADU design, and community. The 20k prize will be awarded to the participants who meets three simple requirements.
1. The ability to resource and upcycle materials from various sources. Example. Houses slated to be demolished, thrift stores or construction sites.
2. The ability to garner low to no cost labor to help with the build. It doesn't matter if you choose to do 100% of the labor or you got the entire community to chip in.
3. Biggest savings and the most innovative design wins.
No professional qualification is required. Design proposals can be developed individually or by teams (4 team members maximum). Two winners will be chosen per round with the 20k prize awarded to each winner.
