It’s no surprise that a wall made of 6”steel reinforced concrete columns is stronger than one made of wood. The impressive feature is just how much stronger building with ICCF. (insulated concrete form)
Dynamic shear tests, designed to simulate earthquakes, measured our product strength to be up to 700% stronger than traditional wood frame walls. In fact, tests elevated to simulate a magnitude 8.5 level earthquake on a 6 story structure, caused no structural damage.
ICCF building blocks are engineered to stand up to the challenges of severe climates including tornados, fires, hurricanes even earthquakes.
Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) traditionally are made of expanded polystyrene (EPS). However there some disadvantages of using (ICF) because it's made using virgin EPS/Styrofoam. This led to a new material which later was called Compound or Composite ICF’s and ICF turned into ICCF. The Compound ICFs (ICCF) are the most environmentally friendly insulated concrete forms. Our Compound ICF blocks are made from a mix of recycled expanded polystyrene and Portland cement paste, thus avoiding many disadvantages known of other (foam) ICFs.
The benefits of ICCF blocks are numerous. One of the primary benefits is Energy savings recorded to range from 30 to 90% compared to wood-frame or concrete block homes depending on your climate.
Near Zero Air Infiltration
Home built using ICCF products are extremely airtight. No joints exists between walls, or walls and floors. It also prevents conditioned air leaking from the interior to the exterior of the home.
Energy saving from reduce air infiltration are obvious when compared to the large amount of heating and cooling loss experience in traditional build homes.
Continuous Installation
Another key benefit to ICCF walls is the consistency of the installation in the wall system. In wood frame walls and concrete block walls, stud, plates and headers area are solid wood, which allow heat to be conducted more easily. The installation which is the real barrier to heat loss is interrupted at these locations. This means that often up to 15% of your wood frame walls or concrete block walls has no installation at all. ICCF walls have a consistent and continuous EPS composite installation.
Thermal Inertia/ Thermal Mass
Another benefit of iccf construction is the concrete's ability to buffer or absorbs and later release heat, due to its large thermal Mass. Much like an adobe wall in New Mexico, heat slowly builds up in the wall, as The Sun Shines on it during the day, to release it into the interior during the night. This thermal Mass Effect; or ability to store heat and release it when needed, also saves energy, especially when outside temperatures fluctuate above and below the inside temperature daily.
Superior Installation Value
ICCF assemblies are up to three times higher and real R value than local code build construction.
Two homes built side by side.
ICCF Monthly utility costs $120.79
Wood frame $249.89
This shows an astonishing Savings of 58.2%. And the importance of these numbers only increase when we see utility cost on the rise throughout the US. I should note here that savings well over 58.2% can be achieved with ICCF construction.
